Registration and submission of forms is by mail to Andrea Fennes:

andrea.fennes@univie.ac.at

The following documents are required for registration for the master's examination:

  • Filled out and signed form "Registration for the Master's examination".
  • Completed and signed form about the examination literature
  • Expert opinion of the master thesis

For the registration for the Master's examination, the examination senate must be registered. This consists of two examiners and the chairperson.

1) First Examiner:

This is the supervisor of the master thesis. The examination subject is the focus area in which the Master's thesis was written or the compulsory module group that secures the fundamentals. This area must already be determined when registering the Master's thesis topic. It is often possible to arrange an appointment with the first examiner to discuss the examination material together.

2) Second Examiner:

Students can choose this person from the list of possible examiners. The examination subject is based on the area to which the person is assigned (see list). It is often possible to arrange a consultation with the second examiner to discuss the examination material together.

3) Chairperson:

Here students can make a suggestion. The chairperson may neither be a supervisor nor a second examiner. The chairpersons are assigned by the directorate of studies according to availability, whereby the suggestions of the students are taken into consideration whenever possible.

Examination Literature

The examination literature form must be signed by the examiners and handed in by the students when registering for the Master's examination.

There are two subject areas in each of the examination subjects or for each examiner.

The examination literature is agreed upon with the individual examiners. The SPL does not specify the scope and type of literature (monography, collection, article).

Procedure of the Master's examination

The master's examination lasts a total of one hour and is divided into the following parts:

Intoduction and Welcome:

At the beginning of their examination, students are asked by the examination chairperson whether they feel physically and mentally able to take the Master's examination. If this question is answered negatively, a doctor's note must be submitted and the appearance to the examination will not be counted. If this question is answered affirmatively, the examination can begin.

1) Presentation & Defensio of the Master Thesis (approx. 15 minutes)

This part is moderated by the chairperson. Usually, students briefly present their thesis and then answer some further questions about it.

FAQ: Is it allowed to use a PPP or similar forms of presentation for the presentation?

A: The presentation of the master thesis is exclusively oral without slides or other presentation materials.

2) Examination subject / First Examiner (ca. 15 Min)

In this part, the topics of the first examination subject are examined. This part of the exam can be handled differently - some examiners only ask questions about the topics they have worked on, while other examiners ask for a short oral presentation as an introduction to the topic and then ask questions.

3) Second Examinaation Subject / Second Examiner (ca. 15 Min.)

In this part, the topics of the second examination subject are examined. This part of the exam can be handled differently - some examiners only ask questions about the topics they have worked on, while other examiners ask for a short oral presentation as an introduction to the topic and then ask questions.

4) Abstimmung des Prüfungssenats und Verkündung der Beurteilung

After everything has been checked completely, the student is asked to leave the room so that the examination senate can agree on a grade. This should not take longer than 10-15 minutes. To announce the grade, the student is asked back into the room (without spectators/listeners) and two grades are announced. One grade is composed of the defensio of the master thesis (see 1)) and the first examination subject (see 2)). The second grade is for the second examination subject (s. 3)).

FAQ: Are family members/friends allowed to watch/listen to the Master's examination?A: As a board examination, the Master's examination is generally open to the public. However, depending on the room size, the space for spectators/listeners is limited.FAQ: Can I also say that I do not want an audience during the exam?A: In principle, the exam is open to the public - however, the Examination Senate will accommodate the students and ask the audience to leave the room. You can also announce this directly before the exam.

And after the master's examination?

After the master's examination, the protocol is signed by all members of the examination senate and sent to the StudyServiceCenter. After that, the graduation documents can be created. These are sent electronically to the students (to the u:account mail address).

Students must then complete the Statistics Austria survey on study abroad (link will be sent in the SSC mail) and send the confirmation to the SSC. If appeals are waived (by mail to the SSC) the title can be held directly. Otherwise, there is a 14-day period for appeals before the title may be cited.
